Pedro Diaz Parada captured after 15 yearsPosted on January 17, 2007
One of the most notorious cartel leaders in Mexico, Pedro Diaz Parada was recaptured on January 17, 2007 in the city of Oaxaca exactly 15 years after he escaped from the prison in Mexico City. Diaz Parada was the leader of the Istmo Cartel, which is considered to be one of the main producers of marijuana in the areas of Oaxaca and Guerrero. He was also the main supplier of marijuana to the other cartels that distribute and take the drugs into the United States. The states where Diaz Parada has a strong influence are Oaxaca, Guerrero, Distrito Federal, Chihuahua, Durango, Chiapas and Veracruz. He also maintained a strong alliance with the Juarez Cartel.
The arrest was announced by Mexico's Attorney General's Office and was made possible by a joint operation between the Mexican Army, the Federal Police and the Division Specializing in Organized Crime (SIEDO). He was arrested under charges of acts of organized crime as well as for the murder of the federal Judge Pedro Villafuerte Gallegos in 1987. At the time of the arrest of Diaz Parada when agents searched the vehicle in which Diaz Parada was in they found a number of weapons that are only permitted for us in the military or air force and 20 packages of marijuana. Diaz Parada was transferred to Mexico City to receive his sentencing. The Attorney General Office also was granted the right to seize Diaz Paradas Ranch "La Providencia" to gather more evidence. Diaz Parada will be then transferred to the maximum security prison of Puente Grande in the state of Jalisco.
Parada Diaz was recaptured after he had already escaped from prison twice. The first time was in 1985 when he was sent to the prison in Santa Maria Ixcotel, Oaxaca. There he was sentenced for 33 years by the judge Pedro Villafuerte Gallegos. There it was said by reporters at the time that when the judge gave the sentence Diaz Parada said to the judge "I will escape and you will die". Three months later Diaz Parada escaped and in September of 1987 Villafuerte Gallegos was assassinated. He was shot 33 times and had a note on him the said "a bullet for every year". The second time he was imprisoned was on May 3, 1990 but later to escape on January 17, 1992 once again.
When Parada Diaz was asked to say what he did for a living he said "I'm just a farmer, I harvest corn and avocados".
