Zetas leader SERGIO PEÑA MENDOZA arrested

Sergio Pena Mendoza (39 years old) of the Zetas drug cartel organization in the Mexican City of Reynosa, Tamaulipas was arrested by Mexican Federal Police. Sergio Pena Mendoza is believed to be the new leader of the Zeta Group in Reynosa, after the former leader Jaime Gonzalez Duran (aka El Hummer) was arrested in the later part of 2008. Sergio Pena Mendoza was known as "El Concord" and used several aliases, including the names Rene Carlos Solis and Arturo Sanchez Fuentes.

Pena-Mendoza was arrested after he tried to flee a police checkpoint in a stolen truck with Texas license plates of 75VWLS. He had an AK-47 rifle in his possession and a Mexican identification card with one of his aliases' name on it. The police checkpoint and incident took place in the "Las Fuentes" neighborhood of Reynosa.

According to authorities, Pena-Mendoza was recently a leader in the drug cartel organization in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas where he was responislbe for controlling the police. He was in charge of the cities, Chapa De Corzo, Tuxtla Gutierrez and San Cristobal de las Casas. It is believed that when previous Zeta leader of Reynosa, Jaime Gonzalez Duran was arrested that Pena-Mendoza was sent to Reynosa in order to organize actions for drug trafficking across the border and to combat actions against the Mexican federal authorities in Reynosa.

In 2003, Mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant against Sergio Penza Mendoza for trafficking marijuana. On June 13, 2006 Sergio Pena Mendoza escaped from the CERESO prison in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. It is believed that Jaime Gonzalez-Duran (El Hummer) helped plan this escape. After escaping from prison it is believed that he was involved in the murder executions of the former tactical leader of the local police and another current police leader in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. On July 3, 2008 police leaders Jose Luis Althuazar Zamudio and Gerardo Reyes Perez (aka El Marlboro) were killed. Mexican police also say that on July 25, 2008 Sergio Pena-Mendoza killed a businessman named Marcos Arcia in San Cristobal De Las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico.

Sergio Peña Mendoza (El Concord) is affiliated with Miguel Angel Trevino Morales (aka Z-40), Daniel Perez Fojas (aka El Cachetes which means The Cheeks), Ivan Velasquez Caballero (aka El Taliban) and Sergio Basurto Pena (aka El Grande which means The Big One). Pena-Mendoza is suspected to be involved in the failed attempt to free his fellow Zeta member Perez-Fojas who was sent to prison in Guatemala.
