2 Tons of Cocaine Seized Off the Coast of Central America

On Tuesday, June 10, 2014, the U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment worked with the Visit, Board, Search and Seizure team of the USS Vandegrift to board a fishing vessel off the coast of Central America. Upon a search of the ship, the hull was found to contain approximately 1,000 concealed packages of wrapped cocaine. Following the seizure of the narcotics, the vessel was determined unseaworthy due to a lack of functioning bilge pipes. As a result, it was safely sunk.

The very next day, Wednesday, June 11, 2014, the two teams intercepted a second vessel discovered to be transporting 35 large burlap sacks of cocaine. The narcotics were seized and the ship was towed to Costa Rican waters where it was taken into custody by the Costa Rican Coast Guard.
