2,500 Lbs of Cocaine seized by U.S. Coast Guard after Pursuit

The U.S. Coast Guard offloaded the 2,500 pound of cocaine in Miami that was seized during an operation just south of the Dominican Republic.

Coast Guard officials said that on January 22, they detected a 25 foot go-fast boat occupied with 4 subjects and several suspicious packages.  A Coast Guard helicopter attempted to stop the boat; however, the drug smugglers began to throw the packages of cocaine overboard.  The Helicopter fired several warning shots and eventually shot and disabled the boats engines.

45 bales of cocaine were recovered.  The cocaine weighed approximately 2,500 pounds and has an estimated street value of $37 million.

The four subjects will be brought back to the U.S. and turned over to the DEA.
