Illinois State Police Seize over $1.5 Million in Cash on Interstate 55Posted on January 26, 2013
A proactive Illinois State Trooper from State Police District 11 turned a minor traffic infraction into a major cash seizure of over $1.5 million dollars. The trooper was patrolling Interstate 55 on the afternoon of January 26, 2013 when the trooper noticed a southbound 2004 Volvo vehicle with Arizona license plates that had an illegal license plate cover. After conducting a traffic stop on I-55 near Collinsville, the driver was identified as 62 year old Carole Irene Galvez of Gila Bend, AZ.
During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of Galvez and obtained consent to search the vehicle. Inside of the vehicle, the trooper located 27 vacuum sealed bags which contained a total of $1,589,860 in cash. The money was seized and Galvez was arrested for money laundering. Galvez was held at the Madison County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
