On the morning of Wednesday, June 25, 2014, Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico downtown port of entry in Calexico, California, encountered a 1998 Ford Expedition SUV. When referred for further inspection, an imaging system revealed abnormalities in the vehicle’s rear doors.
A subsequent canine sniff alerted to this same area. Officers then performed a search of the doors and located 14 concealed bundles of U.S. currency. When counted, the bundles amounted to $410,980 in cash.
The driver, a 32-year-old male U.S. citizen, was arrested and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations. He is now awaiting criminal arraignment at the Imperial County Jail. His SUV and currency were seized.
