$11 Million Worth of Heroin Seized in NYPosted on May 15, 2014
While conducting surveillance at a suspected heroin mill location on Thursday, May 15, 2014, a team from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Drug Enforcement Task Force Group T-42 observed Edualin Tapia and Guillermo Esteban Margarin enter a Bronx residence at 3873 Orloff Avenue, Apt 7H, carrying suitcases and a white box.
The following day, agents followed a Jeep Cherokee and Acura RDX suspected of being linked to the drug organization as the vehicles drove north in tandem on Interstate 95 towards Connecticut. Early that afternoon the vehicles came to a stop in the back lot of a residential apartment building. Tapia exited the Acura RDX and removed a white box from the Jeep Cherokee, driven by Margarin. Both men then walked toward the apartment building.
Agents performed a “walk by” and noted the white box to contain brick shaped packages. They then entered the apartment after the Tapia and Margarin and observed the two men at the sink preparing to dump the contents of the packages. Agents subsequently secured the scene and conducted searches of both the apartment and an Infiniti associated with it. The white box was found to contain almost 10 kilograms of heroin (22 pounds). Another 13 kilograms (almost 29 pounds) of heroin was also discovered in a back closet of the apartment. $75,000 was located in plain sight on the backseat of the Infiniti.
The heroin was likely intended to for distribution in the New England area where it could sell for more than twice the street value.
Search warrants were next obtained for the apartment at 3873 Orloff Avenue and for Tapias’ residence at 1874 Patterson Avenue. Agents located a small amount of heroin and 3 kilgrams of cocaine (almost 7 pounds) at the Orloff Avenue address. They also located 1 kilogram of heroin (more than 2 pounds) and $10,000 in cash at Tapias’ residence. An additional 4.5 kilograms of cocaine (more than 4 pounds) were also uncovered in a Honda Accord seized from the Patterson Avenue address.
On Saturday, May 17, 2014, another search warrant was obtained and executed at a suspected stash location, Storage Unit #106H at 945 Zerega Avenue in the Bronx. A search of this storage unit uncovered multiple kilogram presses, two assault rifles, one loaded handgun, 2 kilograms of cocaine (more than 4 pounds), and about 200 pills of ecstasy.
Tapia and Margarin are each being charged by the Special Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree and one count of Conspiracy in the First Degree.
