Smuggler Hides 12 Lbs of Heroin in Backpack

Just after midnight on Sunday, March 2, 2014, a 2001 Ford Expedition almost struck a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle on the I-15 in Temecula, California. Once agents had the vehicle stopped, they noted a blackpack in the SUV’s rear cargo area.

A subsequent canine sniff yielded a positive alert for the presence of narcotics. During further search of the vehicle, agents discovered the black backpack contained five bricks of heroin wrapped in plastic. The bricks weighed a total of 12.44 pounds and are estimated to be valued at $242,970 on the street.

The vehicle’s two occupants, a 41-year-old male U.S. Citizen and a 53-year-old male U.S. Citizen, were both arrested. Both the Expedition and the heroin were seized by U.S. Border Patrol.
