U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma sector seized 1,063 pounds of marijuana during a foiled smuggling attempt about 12:30 a.m. today.
Agents observed a vehicle enter the U.S. illegally through the Colorado River south of County 8 1/2 Street. The vehicle crossed the Salinity Canal bridge at County 7 1/2 Street before heading east toward the city limits. As agents responded to the area, the vehicle turned around and went back toward the river where it became stuck a few yards north of the boat ramp on County 8 1/2 Street. The driver and passenger fled back into Mexico leaving the vehicle behind. Agents at the scene found more than 80 bundles of marijuana weighing 1,063 pounds in the vehicle with an estimated value of more than $850,000.
The marijuana and vehicle, which was reported stolen, were turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration officials.
