June 28, 2009 a 1998 Ford Expedition SUV driven by an 18-year-old US citizen, with a 25-year-old female US citizen and 4-year-old child as passengers, arrived at the Lukeville port of entry from Mexico. The primary officer, screening vehicles and persons coming from Mexico, referred the vehicle to a secondary inspection based on discrepancies with the vehicle and inconsistencies with answers to routine questions.
CBP officers at secondary, with the help of x-ray technology, discovered four packages hidden in the gas tank. The officers took out more than 140 pounds of marijuana and arrested the driver. Special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement were notified for further investigation. The marijuana and vehicle were seized.
