On May 18, 2009 at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge, CBP officers came in contact with a 1996 Ford Thunderbird driven by Jesus Roberto Mancilla, a 21-year-old United States citizen. After a primary inspection revealed irregularities to the tires of the Ford, Mancilla was sent to an intensive secondary examination. In secondary CBP officers' inspection of the Thunderbird resulted with the discovery of metal compartments within the four tires of the vehicle. CBP officers removed twelve marijuana packed metal compartments from the tires with a total weight of over 79 pounds of marijuana.
CBP officers arrested the driver and turned him over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizure and will process the driver on federal drug charges.
