Illinois State Police arrest person with Marijuana and a GunPosted on May 31, 2012
On May 31, 2012 an Illinois State Trooper pulled over a white Dodge Shelby Charger on southbound Interstate 55, near Springfield. The driver was identified as 24 year old Howard Caruthers of Columbia, Missouri. Although there were numerous air fresheners inside of the vehicle, the trooper could still smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When the trooper requested Caruthers to get out of the vehicle, Caruthers exited the vehicle and locked the door. The trooper noticed Caruthers had placed the vehicle's key in his pocket. A drug K9 dog was requested to sniff the vehicle's exterior. After receiving a positive alert to the odor of illegal drugs coming from the vehicle, Caruthers gave the trooper the key to the vehicle.
The state trooper then conducted a search of the vehicle which resulted in discovery of a fully loaded Bersa .380 semi-automatic pistol which was in the driver's side door panel. The trooper also located several plastic bags which contained a total of approximately 12 ounces of marijuana.
Caruthers was arrested and transported to the Sangamon County Jail. He was charged with felony marijuana distribution and a weapon charge. Caruthers' vehicle was seized for asset forfeiture purposes
