Multiple Marijuana Seizures in Rio Grande Valley, TXPosted on March 25, 2014
On Tuesday, March 25, 2014, U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Falfurrias Checkpoint along U.S. Highway 281 North conducted an immigration inspection on a tractor-trailer. A canine sniff alerted to the presence of narcotics and a subsequent search uncovered almost 2,600 pounds of marijuana concealed in wooden crates.
A trailer searched that same morning was also found to be transporting more than 1,900 pounds of marijuana inside a false compartment.
On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, U.S. Border Patrol agents in La Rosita observed smugglers loading marijuana inside a van along the Rio Grande. When agents responded to the scene, the van driver head back toward the river and abandoned his vehicle to flee on foot. He was taken into custody shortly thereafter. His van was found to contain more than 1,900 pounds of marijuana.
Several more smaller busts were also made that week, bringing the total amount of confiscated marijuana to more than 18,000 pounds. The total street value of these seizures is estimated to be more than $14.4 million.
