Trailer Being Towed by Pickup Contained 1,620 Pounds of Marijuana

On the afternoon of Sunday, August 4, 2014, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico downtown port of entry in Calexico, California, came across a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup with a utility trailer hitched on the back.

When performing a sniff of the trailer, a narcotics detector dog gave a positive alert. Officer then conducted a search of the utility trailer and discovered 1,620 pounds of marijuana, wrapped in 86 bundles, to be concealed inside the roof. The estimated street value of this find is $730,000.

Both the pickup driver, a 34-year-old male U.S. citizen, and the passenger, a 49-year-old female U.S. citizen, were arrested and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations. The Dodge Ram, utility trailer, and marijuana bundles were all seized by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
