More than 500 pounds of methamphetamine were uncovered on a private recreational boat during a routine patrol of U.S. waters along the harbor in Oceanside, California. The 30-foot, one-manned Wellcraft boat was escorted to the dock by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents on Friday, February 21, 2014.
Following an inspection with a canine, a hidden compartment was discovered running along the sides of the hull and beneath the floor of the boat. The compartment was found to contain 540.5 pounds of methamphetamine in 200 plastic packages valued at approximately $7 million. The boat’s occupant, a 48-year-old California resident, had been returning from Mexico. Both the vessel and the narcotics were seized. The occupant now faces federal prosecution.
